If Only....

Someone like Richard Attenborough or Stanley Kubrick had directed this it wouldn't have ended up such a weak film. Granted the battle scenes are probably the most impressive ever captured on film but unfortunately that doesn't in itself make it a great film.
Patton released the same year is a great war film this falls way short of the mark.

Richard Attenborough would never have made a film about Waterloo as it wasn't a British disaster. Attenborough had his own agenda when making films, which appeared to have been to show the British in as bad a light as possible. Arrogance and incompetence were the chief characteristics of the British in an Attenborough film. It is curious, though, that someone who disliked the British establishment so much was quite happy to become part of it by accepting a peerage.
