A very messy spot…SPOILER ALERT

Since she knew what the penalty would be for commission of the crime, well enough to make a point of warning him about it, why did she take part?

I won’t accept the ‘Love’ angle. Her character is too alert for that, and he isn’t really charming enough to make any sensible person risk a 30 year stretch.

Worse still… She makes sure they all go down.

A sweet story, in its way, but kinda stupid when you get down to brass tacks.

I disagree. We are to assume she was a virgin, and this man was her first love. That can be an enormous pull on somebody, no matter how 'smart' she normally behaved. We don't know what was in the letter she wrote...whether or not she turned herself in as well as her lover. Were that the case, she could have talked directly to the police or her supervisor. I think she fingered her boyfriend, that was her way of gaining back her own dignity. Love--as well as trust and faith--walks blindly thru life.

ok… I’ll buy the ‘virgin’ regaining her dignity defense. I just read her as being much sharper than that; sex not withstanding.

idcook, you didn't "read" her very well at all, in fact you misread her and seem to have projected your own way of being onto Leigh.

Well, clearly he was to her, which is what matters. She was in love with him.
And yes, people CAN do incredibly stupid things when they are in love. In fact, they can do things that are much mor eincomprehensible than this.

reply

Yes. And I think there's no way she turned them all in without turning in herself.
