Why was this film snubbed?

There's a Newman film that still isn't available anywhere? I get that most people didn't like Newman as a total antihero (if I understand the summary correctly), but still, as bad as it might be, why was it completely covered with dust and not even released on VHS?

Good news. It's being released December 7, 2010. I don't think it was ideologically pure enough because the guy on the left wasn't a hero either. No hero? Bad box office.

A dreadful incomprehensible (well, to me) movie. I found nobody to like and it's annoying when the protagonist is the ubiquitous drunk. The cynical Newman talked in riddles and in a manner few of us use in a conversation. A slow plodding drama that stole two hours of my life.

Films don't steal anything from you. I'm sorry you didn't like this, but your life will be just as long whether or not you saw this film. Anything that makes you react is worthwhile. Onward and upward.

That's not true all the Halloween sequels are so bad that the original Halloween sucks now too as a direct result.

I agree with you. I expected a FM type characters caught up in a political drama. I found this pretty much unwatchable. And I love so many of the actors in it. Kept trying to find some reason to keep watching, but gave up about half way through.

Underrated film

The reason that it might"be snubbed" Alfa is that this movie is a real stinker.
I'm all for anti - heroes but this film doesn't even have them. There's simply no one in this mess you really end up caring about and when that happens no one goes to see it or cares about the film. I know Paul Newman always held some regard for this film. I have no idea why.

reply

I agree that this film is a mess. The characters are totally unlikable so there is no one to root for and it's boring as hell. I almost couldn't watch it all in one sitting.

I am very impressed that this movie was made, and I think it was well done - but I can understand why most people didn't see it or saw it and didn't warm to it. It is based on a novel that was a bitter reaction to the violence and bitter struggles of the 60's.

The story doesn't show anyone in a great light - holding up a mirror to us all and our hypocrisies and weaknesses. Most people don't like to pay for entertainment that reflects poorly on their culture and themselves - but I would argue that it is the most valuable, lasting, and rare kind of entertainment that shines a light on our least-admirable qualities and the results of our failures as a people.

...and I see the film as fresh today as when released in 1971, with our current political presidential campaign climate of corruption, deception, public distrust and disillusionment. Nothing changes except Paul Newman's gone, and that's a shame.

I think it was a potentially great movie ruined by an awful score.
