Differences between book and movie (possible Spoilers!)

Hello!

In this thread, I want to compare the novel "Carmilla" with the movie.

Maybe others can add some points too!

1.) In the novel, the name of the Generals niece is not Laura. Laura is the "hero" of the novel, the girl who survives and tells the whole story.

2.) In the novel, there is no male love interest for Laura. There is no boyfriend, no lover, who saves her. That character was added for the movie.

3.) The scene with the woman in the woods chased by Carmilla was added for the movie, it doesn´t appear in the book, although sometimes it is mentioned that girls die everywhere since Carmilla showed up.

4.) In the movie, a man sits in a pub, hears about vampires, and consults the doctor, that visits the ill girl. Later, the doctor gets killed by Carmilla, and the man too. The man was added for the movie, he doesn´t show up in the novel. The doctor exist, but he is consulted by the father of the girl, and he doesn´t get killed.

5.) In the novel, the main character who tells the story (Laura) tells us about an incident when she was 6 years old: she woke up in the night after some nightmares, and the room was empty, the servants are gone, and she was about to cry, but there was a young women besides her bed, who watched her, caresses her and lies besides her and cuddles with her, till she fell asleep. Then she feels a pain on her chest, like two needles, and she screams. The young women suddenly looked at her and disappeared, then the servants come but they couldn´t find anybody in the room.
Later, when Carmilla shows up, she recognizes her as the young woman from that incident. Carmilla tells her, that she had a dream too, when she was 6 years old, in which she woke up in Lauras room etc. Of course that is a lie - it WAS Carmilla, and Carmilla was a young woman back then. All of that stuff doesn´t appear in the movie, and is not mentioned as well.

6.) In the novel, Carmilla gets staked, her head cut off, her body and her head burned and the ash was scattered into the river. In the movie, we only see her head being cut off. Also, in the novel, when they find Carmilla in her coffin, she lies in blood. In the movie there is no blood.

7.) In the novel, Laura and her father are reading a letter from General von Spielsdorf, who tells them, he cant visited as planned, because his niece got killed by a "monster", and he will hunt it. After that, a carriage went by the castle, in which Laura lives, and has an accident. Out of the carriage comes an elderly woman and a beautiful young women, who is unconcious. The older women tell them, she need to travel and can´t stay, the father says, it would be better if the young daughter would stay in the castle till the mother returns. Later, the servants, who witnessed the accident, tell each other, that they saw a third woman inside the carriage, who didn´t get out and was grinning at them through the window.

8.) The famous "man in black" doesn´t appear like in the movie. In the novel, he only appeares in the story General von Spielsdorf tells Laura and her father. He describes how "Mircalla" met his daughter at a ball, and he himself met her "aunt", and then there was a man in black, very pale, talking to the aunt and she says, she must leave immediatly, and asks the General, if he could watch over Mircalla till she returns. In the movie, he is a silent man who appears sometimes on a horseback. But it isn´t explained who he is, but it doesn´t really matter, because there are lots of Karnstein-vampires, and he is not mystified as in the movie.

9.) In the movie, Carmilla also seduces another woman besides Emma, and later she kills her as she begs Carmilla to stay with her. In the novel none of this happens. Carmilla is only interested in Laura (Emma in the movie) and doesn´t seduce anyone else. She doesn´t kill anyone in that castle, neither Laura nor her father nor any of the servants.

10.) The whole scene in the movie, in which Carmilla takes a bath and fools around with Emma, doesn´t appear in the novel.

11.) In the movie, Carmilla wants to abduct Emma, who is very ill, to come with her. In the novel, Carmilla isn´t interested in her - she doesn´t love her, as she is supposed to be just one of many victims. In the end of the story, it is explained that Carmilla just did that to play with her victims.
In the novel, Carmilla stays at the castle with the servants, while the General, Laura and her father visit the Karnstein-castle to decapitate some of the Karnsteins, and want to find Mircallas grave which was never found. After the general tell his story, Carmilla and one of the servants show up. The general recognizes her and tries to kill her with an axe, but Carmilla escapes. They find the grave of her, and the next day they open it, with Carmilla in it.
In the movie, Carmilla want to take Emma with her, but after she is attacked by Emmas boyfriend, she leaves Emma alone and disappears. Later she lies in her grave.

12.) In the novel, the general tells his story. He said, that after his niece got very ill and nearly dies, he consulted a doctor who tells about "magic", about "vampyres" etc.
He couldn´t really believe that, but he hides himself with a sword in the closet of his nieces room. In the night, he sees Carmilla go to her and come near her neck, so the general went out of the closet and attacks Carmilla, but she is too fast and escapes through the door. Later, his niece dies.
In the movie, that whole closet-hide-thing doesn´t appear. Laura dies and then he realises Carmilla is gone, so he knows it was her fault.

Very informative post, thanks. I was wondering about the differences between the movie and Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 book "Carmilla," which was sort of the precursor to Bram Stoker's "Dracula" 25 years later.
