Nice... But...

Beautiful... Whimsical... Thought provoking... To make the most of this movie, you might want to pick up a "Dream Interpretation Dictionary"... What with all the symbolism in this movie. But a HORROR FILM? Not in the slightest.
I picked up the book "101 Horror Films You Must See Before You Die," and I've been watching them as I can get them. Now this is the kind of film I wouldn't have ever heard of... If it hadn't been for that book. I've discovered some VERY good (and scary) movies... And I've run across some films that just stink. This falls between the two... As a fantasy, it's flawless. It's wonderful. But the "horror element" (and there was one,) but it didn't amount to much... To a true horror fan like I am. If this movie was horror, then Labyrinth is also horror... And it's not. There were lots of horror movies, released in 1970, that should have fit the bill... Over this film.
As a film watching experience, I really liked it. As a horror movie, as it was sold to me, it was disappointing.

In one of the reviews posted on IMDb the writer says: Standing on the border between horror and fairy tale it brings out the latent combination of erotic desire, aggression and fantasy that links the two genres. (This from a review by Dr Tanya Krzywinska.) I think this is a good description as to why this film includes horror as one of its descriptors. It's not horrifying in the sense of many films but it's eerie and discomfiting and features vampirism as well as macabre images. That makes it part of the horror genre in my books.

I saw this film as more of a dark fantasy or adult fairytale than a full-fledged horror movie. If perceived as such, it's a sterling example of its kind.

Dark fantasy is a perfect description for it. It was very haunting. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

Can't stop the signal.
