Is there a DVD or VHS with english subtitles available ?

I would love to purchase this movie, I'm a collector of historical themed movies. Please, anyone !

It appears not unfortunately and the only official release seems to be a long oop Italian video.Go to youtube.com where someone has posted approx 18 mins of the film if you want a first look. There can`t be too many films about the Italian-Austro-Hungarian front in WW1 and this one seems to be highly regarded. Can anyone comment on it?Does it compare favourably to "Paths Of Glory"?

I'll go all out and state that it's even better than both Paths Of Glory and All Quiet On The Western Front(both versions). Criminally overlooked outside Italy. But it's so good that a quality dvd version is simply bound to appear sooner or later.

How was Mark Frechette in this? Remember his role at all?

reply

Very good. There are some clips on youtube from this movie and you can get an idea there. But this movie is for watching from start to finish. One of the best war movies ever.

Wow! Really? Thank you!

Hello,

I like everyone else out there has been looking for this film. I just finished reading a wonderful book on the Italian/Austria front in the Great war, titled "The White War" this movie in talked about at the end of the book. Now I can't find it for sale but I did find a picture of the DVD, so at some point in Italy it had been released. Here is the link. If anyone can find the film please post how to get it.

I`ve just managed to see it and it`s certainly on a par with "Paths Of Glory" if not better. The insanity is perfectly illustrated in the crazy General, who in one memorable scene, stands aloft daring the Austrians to shoot him down.Acting is terrific and action scenes are well-handled including an Austrian Cavalry charge.Dialogue is tough and biting interspersed with some light relief as the troops enjoy some pornography. This is certainly one of the best war films I`ve seen recently and as usual it`s incredibly difficult to obtain a copy. A friend downloaded a widescreen version(looked to be approx 1.85:1) with English subtitles so i`ll post a link soon.

Italian dvd is 1.66:1 anamorphic remastered picture ,Italian mono with English subtitles.Disc comes with a booklet(Italian with English translation containing film reviews and interviews with some of the people involved with the film.)Extras on disc include an interview with the Director(approx 20 mins w/English subs)and a small feature on the film`s restoration.Booklet states that the original negative has been lost so the restoration was a particularly difficult process.Picture does have a few blemishes but altogether a very good dvd release.

Just received 14 of his movies, they're all very clean copies. Hope this helps. Alot like Paths of Glory so far. Check out March on Rome,The Great War,It happened in 43,The Four Days of Naples, all war related movies from this webstore.

Thank you very much for this link. I'll check it out, and perhaps order some films there. I'm also looking for movies about Giovane Garibaldi and Tupac Amaru(not the american rapper).

Raro Video released the film last month on Blu-ray (Region A/1) and DVD (Region 1). The movie looks great and the DVD also includes an excellent 30-minute interview with Francesco Rosi, along with a pretty good booklet.
