I must admit that I tend to listen to the French version as the sound is clearer, though it does not give all of the noises such as bird songs etc. Also Deneuve being main character, want to hear her voice rather than her dubbed.
Borderline obsessive
This is an intensely Spanish story by one of Spain's greatest novelists, Benito Pérez Galdós. It has to be heard in the harsh, stoic, guttural Castilian in which it was conceived, because the whole thing is inconceivable outside of Spain.
You also owe it to yourself to hear Fernando Rey's inimitable inflections in the language of Cervantes.
French is a slick, alien presence here, as is Catherine Deneuve's cool, elegant, rational figure and manner. I love her, but not in this.

The version I watched only had Spanish and English available.
I don't get "harsh, stoic, guttural Castilian". It never sounds that way to me, whereas French does.
