Reminiscent of Bitter Moon

Did anyone else find the dysfunctional relationships reminiscent of the movie Bitter Moon, in which estranged lovers are bound together by physical disability?

Although there are many differences, I felt a hint of similarity in the hardness which evolved in the lives of the female characters of both.
