The scene is absolutely inspired and it feels to me that it actually achieves an overall wholeness of "stranger than fiction", while being fictionalized anecdotal material the entire time. It is so strange and wacky that it becomes bliss, and I welcomed the many hearty, many real laughs the scene got out of me.
I think the fact that Holly refused to give the welfare worker her favorite pair of shoes MADE the scene. The girl may not have all her teeth, but she's got her DIGNITY! The whole scene was genius in how it was unpredictable and unpredictably real.
That scene was the part of the movie I will remember the most.
