Holly Woodlawn's Performance

I've read recently that people were campaigning for Holly Woodlawn to get an Academy Award nomination. I haven't seen Trash yet, I rented it but I haven't gotten a chance to watch it just yet, but would you say her performance is really worthy of a nomination?

I don't know about Oscar-worthy, but she's surprisingly funny and accomplished, given the fact that she's not a trained actor.

If you check out the website www.brightlightsfilm.com...and do a search for Holly Woodlawn, you will find an interview of her that lists the person that was promoting her performance for an academy award. It says that DeNiro and several others didn't know what she would be catagorized under...male playing lead male...female playing male...hope this info. helps

Jaye Davidson was nominated as a male for playing a female, but under the Best Supporting ACTOR Category, in 'The Crying Game.'

Besides her hilarious scenes, Holly has a pronounced overbite and pouty lips, which was popular among starlets at that time. That adds to the appeal, I guess.

Life is never fair, and perhaps it is a good thing for most of us that it is not.

Im not sure, some parts of that movie Holly performance is shockingly real. Like when she catches Joe with her sister, but then again she is just as over the top in other scenes. I was still amazed by her performance.

Suggesting that Holly Woodlawn was denied an Oscar nomination because of confusion over whether she should have been classified as a Supporting Actor or Actress is a moot point on several levels.

First, performers are nominated on basis of true gender, so that wasn't even an issue. (Linda Hunt won a Best Supporting Actress award for playing a biological man in The Year of Living Dangerously.)

Second, despite enthusiasm in some quarters over her spirited performance, Holly never stood a chance of being nominated (let alone winning) for her work in a crude-looking X-rated underground movie (near pornographic for the time) made by a ragtag group of non-professionals with absolutely no connection to the Hollywood establishment. Never woulda happened. And didn't.

For the record, this was the year that John Mills and Helen Hayes picked up the supporting awards, which shows what voters were going for back then. 'nuff said.

Holly was the only attractive woman in the movie! You can tell that it was produced by a gay man. The men were just beautiful, but the women were pretty hideous!

Jane Forth was a model, and had quite a lot of influence over the art and fashion worlds with her particular style.
