British Soldiers in Range?

In the final scene when Sam and Tosh are zig zagging across the field to reach the English base, it seems like the large group of soldiers cheering them on are within range of the Japanese Rifles and machine guns. If the English guns at the base are in close enough range to hit single Japanese soldiers, then certainly the Japanese could hit the English onlookers so tightly grouped up. It’s just one of those scenes that I’ve thought didn’t make sense, even as a kid.
