Fate of the American Convoy?

Seeing as it's the catalyst for pretty much everything that happens in the movie, it's a bit odd we never find out what happens to it.

The way I see it, The team failed to send the fake message, so the Japanese wouldn't be diverted away from the fleet. At the same time though the transmitter was destroyed so the base couldn't direct them to the fleet.

HOWEVER contrary to what the British believed, the Japanese -did- have a recon plane presence in the area, so wouldn't that mean that a) they'd know about the fleet anyway b) they'd know before they even were sighted by the port up north, and c) the ENTIRE commando mission was a waste of time?

Bit confused here.

(spoiler) The entire point of the latter half of the movie is that someone needs to get back to the British base so as to warn the American fleet of the previously unknown Japanese air power in that area. Since Tosh made it back, we should be able to assume that the American fleet was sufficiently warned so as to alter plans or properly defend itself.

OK, that outlines it pretty clearly. Thanks for that.

Kinda surprised that you thought the convey was more than a back story to explain the how and why.

reply

Although... and this has always bugged me. Tosh doesn't say a word to the British about the Japanese air base before he turns around and walks back out toward the "field" where Cliff lies dead (and he is subject to dying as well, should the Japanese still be hanging around). So what a risk he took. Fairly stupid, I think.

SPOT ON! Thought the exact same thing. But it was poetic license for a more dramatic ending which was OK by me!
