American Film Theatre series

Much of this series of films is currently being run on cable (on Trio). Last night, they showed "The Three Sisters" (with commercials) and the sound was godawful. Is that the fault of the channel or is it just the way the film was put on VHS and DVD?

reply

I saw the film on VHS a few years back and the sound was fine.

The main problem I had with the film was the overly stylised setting which works fine in the theatre but is unsuited to films.

Lumet did a more realistic version of The Sea Gull and I thought it was much better.

question ? warning spoiler re Baron Tusenbach,

in the film he commited suicide effectively by moving so the bullet meant to just scratch him, killed him, and he did this because Irena while she agreed to marry him and be a good wife, did not love him.

Was this evident in reading the play and on stage ?

reply

No it is not evident.
In fact, Chekhov never included the duel in Act IV, it is announced by the Dr that Soliony killed the Baron.
