Why does the house owner prevent janitor from talking with the police?

Why does the house owner prevent the janitor from talking with the police?

I just can't explain it. The priest isn't the house owner's friend and it's always better to have someone else being accused.

I couldn't work it out either. It makes a bad movie just stupid.

I don't know, maybe he was scared that the janitor might reveal some incriminating information about him. What I find more confusing is why were the pool hall buddies attacking Tibbs? Story line is pretty sloppy.

Yeah, I thought he was going to be involved in the murder because of that. Like the other posters say, this movie has a pretty crappy script.
