Maybe a contradiction

We can see Virgil Tibbs' family in this movie. I remember Police Chief Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger) asking him whether he was married or not in the previous one, 'In the Heat of the Night'. Tibbs told him he wasn't. My dilemma is: did he tell a lie or have so many years elapsed?

Note that in the "Heat of the night, Virgil is playing a plain detective, and on this movie, is playing a Lieutenant.
I think some time has elapsed..

I think that only the name and the actor was used for a completely different story.
He also moved from Philadelphia to San Francisco.

Exactly. The same actor taking the same name and same job and just making a completely different movie.

He has been on the SFPD for 12 years? And he and his wife have known the reverand their entire lives?

reply

He makes a point of saying in the first film that they call him MISTER Tibbs. Well I don't recall anybody doing that in this film. Mostly Virgil, and he answered the phone as "Tibbs".

reply

He was married with kids but did not want anyone to know.
Personal reasons.
