What happened to Burgess Meredith's character?

He is seen shooting Alan Hale in the chest twice in the guard's barracks; later during the action of the escape, he merely sits on a chair while the others begin their escape actions and says something about how he is finished. I don't recall seeing him being shot - does anyone know what happened to him?

Just watched this a few days ago and I don't think the fate of the Kid is ever addressed. Just another Hollywood mystery I suppose.

He'd snapped. He was talking about his "farm" -- the one he escaped to when times got tough. For shooting "Tobaccy," he'd be hung. He knew he wouldn't get far in an escape, so I guess his mind snapped, and he just sat there, raving mad -- although I think he was half mad when he shot Alan Hale's character. Everything was ruin, and in his mind, even his "farm" was ruin. He'd pay for what he'd done with his life, and he just ran out of hope and solace. So he went "Cuckoo," just as he feared.

We don't have the final end of him explained, but likely he raised his rifle to someone else and got shot. Of course, Pitman wasn't planning on taking him with him anyway. He had no intention of anyone living to split his cash. He either set them up or shot them himself. Or, as was the case with the "daisies," he just left them behind expecting him to return.
