Shocking scene

Watched Eyewitness after v long time - and was shocked by a particular scene- where Peter Bowles' character cold bloodedly shoots a little girl and her father dead - was there any controversy at the time?
Although it could be edited out I'm wondering whether this is why it is rarely shown on TV and largely forgotten?

one of the few shocking scenes where kids are murdered on camera .

In addition to that depiction, there were also a couple of scenes that represented extreme risk to the actors and stunt people. These were in the chase and demolition scenes. The commentary mentions them.

It appears there was a strong desire to build the sense of danger in the movie.

I was shocked by that scene too. What makes it so shocking and unexpected is because the tone of the film up to that point didn't seem very dark to me (even though a couple of deaths already took place). The bad guys seemed almost comic before that but the last 30 minutes of the film were much more serious and gruesome.
