Why is this movie Rated R?? Does anyone know?

Drug use. Nudity. Profanity. Violence. By now it's pretty tame, but at the time it was majorly controversial. Also, the subject matter, of drugs, abortion, unethical behavior in a Hospital, et al. Pressed buttons back in the late 60s/early 70s. Love this film!
