DVD release?

I hope this film gets a proper dvd release soon.

Don't hold your breath. This film deserves a proper release, but it might take a while longer.

There must be some sort of legal thing going on. Do you have inside info? I'm pretty sure his other film "The Conformist" has legal issues. Maybe the same is true here.

Don't know whether or not anyone is still following this post, but I suspect the hold-up on the DVD of this film has to do with the fact that New Yorker holds the rights. This is also the case with BEFORE THE REVOLUTION. New Yorker been painfully slow to release their substantial catalogue of art cinema on DVD. Unfortunately, the DVDs they *have* put out tend to be rather sloppy - a little but not much better than Fox Lorber in terms of image and sound quality. Our best hope might be that Criterion figures a way to snag the rights; or perhaps an English company like Artificial Eye will get to it first. It is a shame that it languishes in the vaults, because it is a beautiful film - it really deserves a great DVD (perhaps preceded by a theatrical reissue, a la THE CONFORMIST?).

Conformist has a DVD now...but sadly there's no Stratagem DVD in sight.

This is a wonderful film that must be seen. The DVD must be made soon ...please.
Wonderful storytelling in every way & so visual. I lent my VHS to a friend who never gave it back.

Doesn't look like anyone's been here for a while, but sign me up for this petition. This is a fabulous film, and given that a limited re-release of IL CONFORMISTA in London this month has garnered plenty of broadsheet press attention, it's bound to sell. Let's get this film out where it belongs, so it can be properly celebrated.

Update:
There are suggestions on the German website www.jpc.de that this film is to be released on the Kinowelt label on 1 September 2008, although, crucially, it doesn't actually appear on Kinowelt's own listings. Elsewhere, however, it is claimed that this will be the restored version first presented at the Venice festival in 2007 and will, sadly, only have German subtitles (it's called STRATEGIE DER SPINNE, which is a direct translation of the Italian)

If this is true (and can anyone confirm it?) then why oh why oh why oh why is there no news of a release in Britain or America? Can someone please pull their finger out?

Further update:
Well, that didn't happen. It was just pulled from the jpc website one day in September and hasn't been seen since. Still we wait.

None at all, sadly, Coma-Man.

I check periodically without any success. I think the fact that the picture was part-financed by Italian television may be what's holding up its release. For some reason there are always complex rights issues involved whenever that's the case. However, some later Rossellinis (also television-funded) are slowly seeing the light of DVD-day, so that may be a hopeful sign.

I promise to post here if I ever get firm news. Until then, my old video will have to do.
