a date goof

ok i don't know if anyone noticed, but the movie took place in what..the 1820's 1830's or so right?

or maybe even as late as the 1850's? I don't quite remember when, but what i DO know is that they made a huge goof in this movie. whatever the date is, the two leads were discussing family and how candace bergen's father fought with General Custer at little big horn, and died.

the problem with that is, Custer didn't die at little big horn, until 1876. they were who knows how many years early. it was unbelievable. don't know who else noticed it, but it was pretty major i'd say.

if at first you dont succeed....Skydiving isn't for you

This movie was inspired by the Sand Creek massacare, not about it. If you think about it there would be a lot more than just a date goof if this movie was supposed to be a historically accurate telling of Sand Creek.

Since you obviously have no idea of the date, how the hell can you possibly decide that's a goof? She's telling you when the movie happened. Look at the uniforms, there was no Indian wars on the plains going on in the 1820's bubba.

Frankenhack is right (and so is ragreen, I might add). The film is inspired by and compares the actions of the cavalry in the movie to those who perpetrated the massacre at Sand Creek. In other words, the film was a fictional event designed to show how brutal things were for the Native Americans and it justified itself by referencing the Sand Creek massacre.

The events in the film are bad but they were a bit more closer to the norm than what happened at Sand Creek, hence no soldier cuts out fetuses and impales them on spears or bayonets, no soldier makes purses out of testicle sacks etc. unlike at Sand Creek.

The movie was inspired by the Sand Creek battle (about 1864).
