How do I know if my version is the uncut one?

I just bought soldier blue on DVD, its the same version I had on VHS a few years ago so its the only version I have seen. How do I know if its the uncut one?

reply

You're kidding, right?

reply

I think he's talking about the German DVD.

There has never been an uncut version of this film released in any form. I was in the studio when Roy conducted and recorded the score, and I saw the original before it was cut. A little trivier here! Roy new that the film would never get released the way it was intended. So when he wrote the massacre score, he decided to hold the theme without any major chord changes so if and when it was cut the music would continue without any sharps cuts in the background music.

So what is missing? In the swedish version you see the rape scene where a soldier starts cutting of a womans breast, kids get their heads chopped off, a little girls gets shot through her eye and you see the whole back of her skull explode (almost) with blood splatters. Soldiers dancing around with hacked of limbs and heads, soldiers teasing Jonas with hacked of limbs, dismembered bodies everywhere and so on. So, what was cut from the original movie?

This is one of the most disturbing depictions of war atrocities I have ever seen. Graphic violence to the absolute limit. Its not very common that moviemakers show the killing of kids in such detail as in this movie.

They're all cut!
I own all available versions on DVD (there are no NTSC versions I'm aware of) and several legitimate tape copies (One NTSC (it's PG!!!) and several PAL VHS).
The best is the German DVD.
Then the Dutch.
Then the UK.
I've been told that an uncut version was broadcast in the UK.
My brothers both reported that it was the best they had seen but was still cut.
I scour the planet for different version and have everything out there and I'm still looking for this holiest of grails.

Even the IMDb lists the German and Dutch DVDs (PAL) as uncut which I disagree with.
So, if you have the German version, you are in the best shape you can be.
Next the Dutch, then the UK.

There is a US version which is almost uncut and is similar to the German one.
The scene that is a giveaway it is cut is the sickening one where the indian woman is raped and her breast is cut off. Scene is terminated just as the blood flows. The original was more graphic and lingered longer.

Alright thanks, I have the scandinavian version, guess thats a no good version then?

I beg to differ with what the last poster said about each UK TV showing being cut.

This is a post I made on another thread, see link below:

SPOILERS AHEAD.

This was shown recently on Sky Cinema (in the UK), and a lot of the 'cut' scenes mentioned appear to be there.

The rape shows a man pulling his trousers down and getting on top of a naked Indian girl, then he gets up and grabs her breast and cuts it with a knife, I think it shows the knife start to cut her, then pulls away.

There's only one horse fall that I remember and I think it shows it all, when Q Cumber starts chasing them, and the horse trips over the rope tied between a tree and a rock.

A mother gets her head cut off by a man on horseback whilst carrying a baby, I think it shows the head roll, then it shows Candice Bergen taking the baby from the decapitated corpse.

I vaguely remember something about an Indian girl tied up, possibly naked or semi-naked.

Oh, and it showed the little kid who helped Spotted Wolf get shot through the back of the head, and the bullet came out of his eye

The DVD version avaible in Europe Sweden is 110 minutes, it shows scenes that was not on the vhs English version.

I've just watched it again on Sky Classics - in the UK - and it appeared to be uncut:

- featured the woman being stripped, then raped, then having her breast sliced with a knife
- beheading of another woman and her head rolling along the ground
- limbs being held up as trophies by US soldiers

This is the version i have on DVD, but not the version that was on the Vhs. Anyway it is terrible how mankind has as it says fromt he beginning always written his history in blood.

I watched a bit of the Mel Gibson film "The Passion of the Christ" some days ago and it just seems to me that all this blood, and suffering of others, seem to be the best that we can do. No wonder history is written in so much so violence, and that people still write their history in blood.

The 110 minute PAL version is regarded as the uncut version, with the 25fps film PAL transfer running at 4% faster than the 24fps NTSC transfer, which results in 115 minutes at the slower rate.

Here is a copy/paste of the overall "verdict" from the dvdcomparison website:
==

OVERALL: Draw

R1 America, R2 Dutch, and R2 -German -releases (from "Kinowelt") are uncut.

CUTS:

* R1 America - (Lionsgate Home Entertainment) - No Cuts
* R2 Germany - (Best Buy) - (Germany - Best Buy) - Cut-version (rated "FSK 16"). There is also "FSK 18" -version, but it´s said to be also cut.
* R2 Germany - (Kinowelt/Studio Canal) - (German - Kinowelt) - No cuts. 109:53 min (PAL). Rated "FSK 16" (new classification).
* R2 Holland - (RCV) - No cuts. 109:53 min (PAL).
* R2 United Kingdom - (Momentum) - Yes, 109:25 min (PAL). Cut by 28 seconds (22 seconds of rape-scene and 6 seconds of horse falls).

While this is all well & fine, I think we should defer to P.Budd, who confirms something that I had read a few years back -- that the original "workprint" assemblage of the massacre scene was deemed unreleaseable by the studio themselves. Therefore it's correct to state that the film was edited before it was even presented to the MPAA and never released in that early workprint form.

The longest version of the film to be presented to the public are the 115m NTSC / 110m PAL prints on the Lion's Gate, Dutch and German DVDs. It is doubtful that the pre-release workprint was ever transferred for small screen viewing so Mr. Budd is probably correct: The "complete" version of the film has never been seen outside of the production staff working on it in 1970.

Strange. I just saw a Kinowelt version (at list it's credited in my R5 disc box, and it's definetly not a bootleg) and it seems to be cut deeply.
1. There is no any detailed horse falling scenes.
2. Indian woman being stripped is shown, but not any raping, then having her breast sliced with a knife scenes
3. Beheading of indian woman is shown but no rolling of her head.
4. No limbs being held up as trophies by US soldiers.
So i must say that if you want to be sure that you'll get uncut version, then you better try LionsGate version.
I'm very dissapointed not getting the full version. This version (the assumed Kinowelt version) not worth showing it to my children (which i don't have yet).

I have the Swedish DVD (English sound track with Swedish subtitles).

It shows the massacre scene with just one part being cut. This part is where a woman's breast is sliced off, with a sword, by a soldier on horseback. This was shown in closeup in the film which I saw in 1972.

Has anyone else seen this part of the film?

reply

I certainly remember seeing this film at the cinema when it came out and remember all the parts mentioned in full being shown. I also later bought a VHS video (before the censorship/classifications came into being) and it had them in too. Some years later having mislaid/lost my original copy of the film, I got it on VHS again, this time with a classification of 18 and many of the parts I remembered from before were missing. Go figure. Ridiculous to stop over 18s seeing what had already previously been on general release seems rather stupid to say the least.

I have seen this movie in two differents european countries (both on TV). In one of them, they showed the terrible scene when the soldier starts cutting of a womans breast and other terrible scenes as described by rugbyspelaren-2 below.

It is not easy to watch it, that is for sure and it is endlessly sad but I think it is very brave/laudable to show it in an american movie.
