Greatest Story in English Language

Today I received my "Christmas Carol" book. 87 pages. Is this the greatest story in the English language? I believe so. Let's set the Bible aside (Old and New Testaments) for a moment. God wrote the Bible after all, Dickens was only a man ; but a heck of a writer! This little book and story is SO deep! Where does that come from?!? How do you create something and someone like Scrooge? How do you do that? I've never seen redemption in any story like this one. Be as cold and hard as you like, this story will grab you by the heart. It's got it all; ghosts, young days, old days ... The music!! I like it. Can't believe they haven't updated it. (People on IMdB talk about remaking everything, Hopalong Cassidy, Death Wish) a new version of a Christmas Carol with new music would be interesting.

Anyway, congratulations to Albert Finney and his associates. Excellent job! It's not Christmas without "Scrooge". John

I agree I think that is why there really isn't a bad version of this story in the Movies. Of course there are a few that have left the path and tried to add their own twist but when they do the story falls apart. But if they stick to the story and add a few twist either to lighten it up or take it a little darker the movies are normally quite good.

I wouldn't normally agree with such sweeping grandiose statements but on this occasion, yes I do think this book is the finest in the English language. Why ? Because it works on every level. In its most basic form it is a pantomime - a simple bad man shown the error of his ways. At its highest level it is classic literature in both style and composition. It shows personality developments that preceded Freud by seventy years. You could actually create another book exploring the themes Dickens considers - in so many areas he is ahead of his time. The book,as you touched on,creates a genuine way to live for people reading and indeed it affected people from the moment it was published. I also believe it is so strong it has been impossible to mess up even in the worst film versions. This is because, even at its most basic, its a great plot ! Millions before you have enjoyed this book so no problem in your doing so now.Happy Christmas !
