Release Dates in the UK

We know this film had its premier in November 1970 in the UK but as it was issued later everywhere else. Do any of you in the UK remember it playing two years later in 1972 over the Christmas holiday ? There doesn't seem to be any re-issue at that time but I wonder if any of you have personal memories of seeing it then ?

Yes, it played again in L.A and Washington D.C in 1972. It also made it's showcase debut (after playing the Music Hall in 1970) in New York (1971). Some states like California, saw a few re-releases for the rest of the 1970's, even after it was shown on NBC-TV in 1974.

I was just about to draw your attention to this thread if you hadn't answered ! Thanks for that. I have a poster, it looks English , and is annotated with the words 'Opening 27 December 1972, book now'. The printer was in Nottingham (which is where the poster has now returned to) so I am assuming it had an English re-release.On a personal note, I can remember my brother seeing it at the cinema and being frightened by the phantoms.I wasn't allowed to go - too young ! A 1970 release would put him at 9 and me at 6. I'm not sure I'd have remembered that kind of detail from being 6. I guess it could have just been a cinema putting it on again in isolation. I don't know how these things work.

I first saw it in Northern California back in 1971. I loved it, and wish I had had more oppurtunities to see it on the big screen. But, it wasn't until it made it's Network TV debut in late December (23) 1974, that I saw it again. Sadly, it was cut to fill a two hour time slot. I bought the Soundtrack Album, then the VHS, the DVD and, finally, the Blu-Ray. Still wish to see it in a theater again, but on a 50 inch TV screen, the Blu-Ray looks (and sounds) fantastic.

I have the blu-ray myself and I agree, its good. It's worth catching a live show if you can too. I saw Newley at Birmingham in 1992 (whom I didn't care for) but Tommy Steele was much better. None were a patch on Finney mind you but then no one is.The musical is doing the rounds all over the world now and its interesting to hear the new songs (and the old ones that were cut from the original release).
