Jennifer O'neill could not act

I felt like she ruined this movie. I felt like I was watching a "B" movie because she was such a lousy actress.

reply

It was painful hearing her...watching her was a different story :)

Wonder if the Duke was annoyed with her or just didn't care at this point in his career?

reply

Yep, I agree. The character could've been so fun and interesting too, so that makes it extra disappointing for me.

"Didn't you go to school stupid?"
-"Yep, but I came out the same way."

reply

Agreed, Jennifer's couldn't act. They should have given Sherry Lansing that part.

reply

She's so bad, she actually makes Christopher Mitchum's acting look good.

Lansing wasn't very good, but she was Meryl Streep compared to O'Neill. Her "performance" has to rank as among the worst EVER on screen. It's so embarrassing it makes you cringe. I can't believe that while they were shooting this picture no one could tell just how mind-numbingly awful she was.

In socialism man exploits man. In capitalism it's exactly the opposite.

reply

Yeah, pretty cringeworthy. She had no sense of timing in terms of dialogue whatsoever. When she spoke to another character, she would start her line before the other person stopped speaking. Not very convincing either, emotionally.

Actually, Howard Hawks always had his actors do that.

reply

No-one in this movie could act, except for John Wayne! How could he make such a poor movie?

reply

... after that she was bad.
Perhaps she had extra rehearsal for the opening dialogue?

"It's the system, Lara. People will be different after the Revolution."

reply

At least she's easy on the eye! Jorge Rivero was terrible! His delivery was choppy and awkward. Tough to watch his performance.

I agree, Jennifer O'Neill was appallingly bad. Can't believe the great Howard Hawks would allow her horrible acting to compromise an otherwise good film. Jorge Rivero is similarly bad, though a bit better.

The only worse actors I've ever seen in a big movie would be Glen Campbell in True Grit or Troy Donahue in anything.

reply

Really? Have you seen Ali MacGraw in "The Winds of War?" She makes Jennifer O'Neill look like a female Olivier in this.

I think it was her first film with an unsympathetic director who only had one objective - mold her into another Hawksian woman. I think he does this in every film - certainly every film since The Big Sleep. He wanted to create another Lauren Bacall and when O'Neil frustrated him he apparently tried with Sherry Lansing. Lets face it, there is only one Lauren Bacall, a talent apparently spotted by Hawk's wife, and, imo only Joanne Dru came close to matching his vision in Red River. So whilst I agree Jennifer O'Neil wasn't that good in this bloated but oddly enjoyable western I don't think it was all her fault and she was good in later films.
