Because of Odd Censorship, Full Version of This Movie is Not Available

After Rabbit, Run was released theatrically, the movie was shown on non-cable TV in a highly edited version. The movie wasn't available on DVD or via any other means until it was released a few years ago (to the best of my knowledge).

The version you can watch instantly shows the vast majority of scenes that were edited from the TV version of the movie. However, the edited TV version contains a brief scene that's edited from the version you can watch instantly. While I've never seen the DVD, I would guess that it's probably edited there too.

There is a scene in which Rabbit (James Caan) goes to home of the reverend with whom he often plays golf (Arthur Hill). The reverend isn't home, but his wife, Lucy (Melodie Johnson) is. Most of this encounter is shown on all versions of the movie, but here's the part that is edited from the version released a few years ago, but NOT edited from the commercial TV version. It's pretty brief:

Soon after Lucy answers the door, Rabbit asks her if the reverend has any children. Lucy replies that he does, and that they're all girls. She tells Rabbit that they're "his own little harem."

Personally I don't see why this would be edited. Perhaps whoever edited it felt that it was a reference to pedophilia, which it would be if it's meant literally. I never took Lucy's remark that literally when I watched the movie. I've never read the book, though, so I can't comment any further on what it was intended to mean. Still, I find it surprising that this would be removed from the "uncensored" version of the movie, and obviously those who edited the movie for TV decades ago didn't think it was worthy of editing either.

The above is mentioned only as a bit of trivia, but I felt it would be better written about it this section.
