Cocteau in color

I've always wondered what it would've looked like if Jean Cocteau had made a movie in color, and after stumbling on this little gem last night, I think I have my answer. In so many ways, this felt like a spiritual successor to Beauty and the Beast to me, and I loved it for that. The slow motion, the living statues, the in-camera special effects, the extravagant design, the childlike whimsy, even Jean Marais himself; Demy channeled Cocteau so fully, that I honestly felt I was watching a Cocteau movie a lot of the time. And yet, you can see a lot of Demy in there as well, making it a delightful and bizarre concoction. I'm very happy to have discovered it!
