Question regarding the iconic "I was here" scene at the ruins of Carthage

So yeah, something that I am curious about in regards to this scene - when Patton and Bradley are standing amongst the ruins of Carthage, Patton tells Bradley how this was the location of a battlefield where he fought at in the ancient era. My question is this - was that battlefield officially recognized as the actual location of an ancient battle or did Patton just have the internal instinct that this was where the battle occurred?

Interesting scene altogether

He told his driver to change course and drive down a side road.

When he came to the sight he felt that he had actually been there in battle in a previous life.

Great scene in a timeless film.

So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

I believe Patton was referring to the Battle of Carthage in 149 BC (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Carthage_(Third_Punic_War)).

However, the scene was actually filmed at Volubilis in Morocco (https://maps.app.goo.gl/HxxqqmTN5YJ7ErwD9).
