The voice of the pilot sure sounded like Matthau. Anyone know?

It does sound like him, doesn't it? I don't know for sure, though.

Just what I thought, too!

But it credits the pilot as Regis Toomey.

You're right! I didn't even think they'd credit such a small, unseen role. I should have checked.

When I saw it in the theater way back when, I was sure it was Walter Matthau doing a cameo~at least a vocal one. I'm watching it now on Encore, and I thought of Matthau again during that scene.

It would be so neat if it was!
