George and Gwen were Christian Scientists

During the scene where George and Gwen are trying to pray in the NYC church, and the tv man tells them that the church is closed, George mentions that this church is of their denomination. This church, which still exists on Central Park West is a Christian Science church.

Actually it's Catholic. George even made the sign of the cross before he leaves. Jack Lemmon was a Roman Catholic in real life as well. The church itself used in the filming may have been Christian Science but the religion depicted was Catholic

The scene was filmed at Holy Trinity Lutheran at 65th and Central Park West. Not all, but many Protestant faiths also cross themselves including some Lutheran synods, Anglicans, Episcopalians, and Presbyterians. Not trying to argue with you, just saying. The easiest way I've been able to determine the true denomination of churches used in films while watching the movie is to look for flags. Christian churches will either have a papal flag (mostly gold and white) or a Protestant/Christian flag which is red, white, and blue.

The outside steps scene may have been the Christian Science Church, but the interior is Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 65th and Central Park West.
