Somebody please explain to me who she really was. I totally didn't get the ending.

Daisy Gamble was Daisy Gamble...at the end of the movie, everything is clear to her, and she is able to see her past and future lives (it's a clear day, and she can see forever - she feels as though she's part of every mountain sea and shore. She can hear from far and near, a world she's never, never ever heard before).

Actually, she was someone in the future, she supposedly 'sees' into the future and sees that she will one day be married to the Yves Montand character and that is why they can part at the time, since he knows they'll meet again.
Silly, but then the whole movie was, but some great music.
