Why was this held up from release all these years? Music??

I read about it long ago in the Cult Classics book and occasionally when discussing "lost movies", this came to mind. Now Roger Ebert's website has an article on this that said it was due to "music rights" that kept it off the market. Music rights? What music rights?

Something to do with either Cat Stevens or Can, I suppose.

Probably Cat Stevens' music. He converted to Islam, changed his name, and tried to have all of his music he did as Cat Stevens destroyed because it wasn't done for the glory of Allah.
