SPOILER: Does Mike die too?

SPOILER:

Okay, we know Susan hits her head on the lamp thing and dies in the pool. Mike is in the water holding her.
Does Mike die too? I mean, considering the lamp thing could easily get into the rising water and electrocute him I think there is a possibility.
Anyone?

No, I doubt it. What will happen to Mike is more likely left to our imaginations. I see the ending as the symbolic point of Sue's fall. Then again, that's just my opinion. I must say, this is possibly my favorite film of all time. Yours, J.J.B.

This movie came out the eyar I was born and I JUST NOW found out about it through a CULT CLASSICS book. Why doesnt it get any credit? It was great! The copy I have is a real worn out second hand VHS copy. I could hardly hear what the charactors were saying cuz the sound was so muffled. I wish someone would put this out on DVD.

I rented a bootleg DVD from the store near me. Very good quality for the most part. The DVD does cut out a bit early though. The last image seen is of Mike holding Susan in the water as her head is bleeding, both of them naked. Does anything happen besides that? End Credits?

SPOILERS: Thats the last image I recall! She hits her head and dies and he's holding her. End.

I've just watched a ripped VHS, originally taped from RAI. There were no credits, but maybe that's just because RAI cuts movie credits (or does it?).
The last image was the underwater poolscene as you descibed.

By the way, could the original poster please change the thread's title? Very kind to add "spoiler" to it, but a tad too late…

No, that's not the end. I've just seen the new Paramount 35mm print, which is fantastic. The final shots are of Mike again swimming underwater above Sue (this time with blood clouding around her head).

reply

That's what I mean. So including the blood.

the wanker should die. What a rip off of Equus.

reply

Deep End was released in 1971 and Equus was written in 1973.

Point well taken. Bottom line: sexually repressed stalker plots are boring.

Way off.

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges!

I just watched the movie earlier today on TCM, recorded from DVR. the last couple of minutes didn't record
can anyone tell me what happened after Sue and Mike had sex? the last shot I saw was them wrapped up in towels.

reply

I too missed the last :02 of this. Can someone tell me how she hit her head on the lamps?

Thanks in advance.

He swings the lamps at her. It didn't look like he swung them with much ferocity but evidently it was enough to kill her. And as far as getting electrocuted, that's how I expected both of them to die when the water starting pouring in (would have been a better, more tragic ending I think with both of them dying together). Not to get too technical but without a ground fault circuit interrupter (required on all modern pool lighting circuits), the hanging wires definitely pose an electrocution risk as a standard circuit breaker would probably not trip in time to spare their lives. Interestingly, GFCI, introduced in the 1960s, was not required on pool circuits until 1968 (in the U.S.).

that was my first thought too - wasn't the kettle still in the empty pool?

reply

They cut her head and she fainted. She might not be dead from the lamp but she'll drown.

I just assumed Mike drowned himself.

That's what I think as well. He just plans to be with her and never leave her. SOOO, he will drown eventually.

The scene itself is left for the viewer to draw conclusions. I hate it when movies do that. An ending with no closures.

Thus.

And for those who haven't seen the film, the whole thing is on YouTube.

The first chapter is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb4zMypfawg

I saw it on YouTube today, the picture quality is pretty good.

I wasn't sure about the film after 20 mins but on the whole, I really liked it although I can imagine it being a film that would divide opinion.

reply

We don't know that actually: we've had quite a few earlier hints that parts of the film are Mike's fantasy.
Everything that follows may be Mike's fantasy as he is ducked/drowned by Susan's "admirers"- he sees her swimming naked there, remember.

On the BFI DVD, some of the participants talk about an alternate ending which was apparently shot but not edited together, in which Mike is seen running down a street and abruptly dies in a traffic accident.

I never assumed Mike died too, by electrocution, drowning, or any other means. From the moment he lowered the big lighting unit, I DID begin to wonder if that wasn't going to have something to do with someone's demise, but after Mike swung it & klonked Sue in the head, even thought the water was continuing to rise, nothing indicated that he was going to die. He swims over top of her body, embracing her as the blood spreads, and they intertwine underwater as the end music plays. Very eerie.

It's interesting an alternate ending was shot, but I think I prefer the open ending as it is. I like open endings like that, so long as they're not TOO open (in this case, we are sure that Mike killed Sue).

I can't understand your crazy moon language.

reply

also Mike dreamt of swimming with her

reply

I never thought of this, sounds like an ok ending for this type of movie.

reply

I believe Mike will die . He will keep holding her till he gets an electric shock. I think it's a better ending they die together.
