You Need To See This Movie

I bought a copy of this remarkable film, on laserdisc (since there is no VHS or DVD in sight). I had never seen it before, though I consider myself a tremendous fan of Ken Russell. In a word, fantastic. A movie to seek out and treasure. Needs to be on DVD soon, and a soundtrack reissue. Underrated and overlooked.

I was working as a projectionist when this film was released in cinemas here in Australia - this film is brilliant - watched it through many times when working.

Same goes for Ken Russells "The Devils"

When are these films being released on DVD here in Australia??????

I bought the laserdisc from Half.com for ten dollars plus shipping. I've had a laserdisc player for a few months, I found one that works at a Salvation Army thrift store in my town. I've had an awful lot of fun finding laserdiscs on Ebay of out of print special editions and other forgotten favorites.

THE MUSIC LOVERS and THE DEVIL'S, are my two favorite films of all time. It is indeed a crime that Ken Russell has been forgotten. Just goes to show that the powers of Hollywood have their heads way too far up their ass holes.
By the way you can make copies from a laser disc. I've done it for people that have never seen Music Lovers or only had watched the full screen version on VHS. It is a totally different experience in wide screen.

haven't seen The Devil's.

in my opinion, Ken Russell is a director who understands music.
I think Amadeus is a better drama but not as good in terms a movie about _music_. Amadeus just "talks" too much literally and does not allow music to speak to the audiecence. i really wanted to ask Salieri to shut up so i could listen to Mozart.

This is another splendid work from a master filmmaker. I can't believe this is so obscure. Fortunately, I was able to find the VHS for 99 cents in a thrift store.

Ken Russell has a feel and an appreciation for the classics – along with a unique style of presentation. I don't know enough about Tchaikovsky to say whether this is accurate, but it certainly was entertaining. 8/10 stars.

Yep. Couldn't agree more. Remarkable and fantastic film - although I was shocked by the nudity. No equality. And the casting of Richard Chamberlain was hmmm... comical? Love what he says at the end. Thought provoking.

No complaint. God forbid that Ken Russell and Richard Chamberlain have a sense of humor.

Not sure if your serious. THE MUSIC LOVERS is a black comedy on romanticism.
It may be that you missed that point. I certainly did the first time I saw it.

For some people if it's not a down right comedy they don't get ironic humor as all Russell's films are.

reply

Yes, thank you - those were the words I was looking for... what I loved about this film was the ironic humor.
