Overlooked gem

I'm baffled. I'm bewildered. I'm pissed...

This movie deals with lots of complex human affairs. No, really, if you've seen it, you know how deep this film goes, thematically. It's very multifaceted - as are its characters. The setting, the beautiful long takes, the wordless moments, Howe's lighting... This is an understated yet ultimately meaningful cinematic experience.

6.8? Less than 2000 votes? No awards at all? No prestige nowadays? No discussions on these boards?

THE MOLLY MAGUIRES is great moviemaking. They don't make them like this anymore (there are few exceptions, like THERE WILL BE BLOOD). Am I alone in this?

I know it's been 2 years since you posted this....I couldn't agree more. Lots of great performances here. Many scenes with little said that spoke volumes. Very nuanced performances, Harris & Connery together = awesome! Anthony Zerbe, as Dougherty, was excellent. The Welsh captain was a great villain, or was Connery the real villain? Or was Harris the real villain? Like you said, this film goes deep.

I am 58 years old and hardcore movie fan. I have always had a great fondness for this movie because I am of Irish heritage and always loved Harris and Connery when I was growing up.

It's not action packed. It's got explosive moments, then betrayal, then drama. That, and most people don't belong to the coal mining industry, so they probably don't sympathize much with the terrorist's aims.

I saw it a couple of times, thought it was all right, but it did take a certain amount of patience to watch.

I quite agree ... I remember seeing this in 1970 - I was a young Presbyterian pastor working in the coal fields of West Virginia ... even then, the lot of the miner was tough. This is an extraordinary film deserving of wider recognition.

As far as **no discussions on these boards** is concerned, I don't recall exactly when it happened, and I don't know if ALL the boards were affected, but several years ago, IMDB changed hands of who supported it, and every discussion board I looked at had been scrubbed clean of all comments.

If I knew who to ask, and could get a correct answer, we might know if that was a deliberate wipe, an accidentally-on-purpose wipe (it wasn't supposed to do THAT), some feature of setting/changing privacy policy, or just a big OOPS.

This title has been OOP (Out Of Print) for quite some time, and copies have been hard to find, and expensive. That has undoubtedly reduced the number of people that have even seen or heard of the movie. I only recently got a copy, and I had been looking for a few years, then finally resorted to buying a used copy online... It has only recently become available from the Warner Brothers Archive Collection as a Made On Demand DVD, so more people are going to be able to view the movie now, BUT, it is priced about the same as a new movie...

It's a superb film on every level and hopefully, one day, it will find its audience.

But you ARE Blanche ... and I AM.

Gus-69: no, you're not alone. I just saw the film on tv and enjoyed it a lot. I liked the gritty reality it showed of the mining environment and the way the miners lived. Also liked the fact that, although much of the plot and characters is fictionalized, the basic plot-line and general nature of what the characters did is not fictionalized to the point that there is a happy ending that completely contradicts reality.

The performances and scenery rang true. Enjoyed seeing all that acting talent in one movie, including Anthony Zerbe.
