criterion release PLEASE!

i own an antique vhs version of mv, and i would love to own a descent dvd version. to my knowledge there's no appropriate dvd release for this great epic (or no dvd release at all).
i think this movie deserves a criterion release. that would be fabulous! what do you guys think?

reply

it does indeed!

Ha ha. This film is a piece of a dictator's (=Ceausescu) nationalistic propaganda, just about as "descent" as your ortography.

reply

i don't know where this hostility of yours comes from, but you are pretty wrong when you call this classic movie nationalistic propaganda. it depicts an important chapter of romania's history and tells the story of one of the most important romanians. and yes, this movie is patriotic.

but it seems to me that you don't get the difference between patriotism and nationalism.

"red dawn" and "behind enemy lines" are nationalistic propaganda movies. mihai viteazul is definitely not!

oh and yes i made a mistake, its supposed to be "decent", big *beep* deal.
get a life, bozgor cretin!

"get a life, bozgor cretin!"

I suppose that's patriotism, then. Criterion-worthy, indeed.

there are rumors which say that columbia pictures wanted to gain the production for this movie with elisabeth taylor and richard burton as bathory couple, orson welles as king rudolf and kirk douglas as mihai viteazul.the communist regime refused the 4 milion dollars offered by the americans and made everything to create a blockbuster.this sound like a myth but maybe from here the ideea of a propagandistic movie.if the romanian regime praise its ancestors it is quite obvios in part because the subectivity in matter of history it is present in every nation.look at U.S. war movie, south korean, danish, french, britain, turk, russia, hungarian, italian and so on)
please escuse me is I offended you by killing a foreign language but I guess I did not made great damage as you reading this standing in your ass and enjoying it.(I hope).greetings from bucharest!

I agree with 'gheri',

it doesn't matter of it's regarded as a patriotic history lesson or political propaganda.

Riefenstahl's "Triumpf des Willens" is pure propaganda, but it has artistic and film historic value. The same can be said about most films by Eisenstein.
Griffith's "Birth of a Nation" is a racist film, but it's still an important piece of film history.
Etc. Etc.

"Mihai Viteazul"(1970)is an important piece of film history and it should be available in the best possible form for future generations.

It's probably the most expensive and most influential Romanian film of the 20th century, like it or not.

I want to have a full-length 4k restoration of the original negative in the correct aspect ratio on BluRay !

And there should be some extra features like:
-the televised interview with the director from 2000.
-interviews with film historians about the production context and politics
-a feature about the career of the late director (died 2013)
-a feature about the actors
-the scene from "E.T." where it's on TV

Criterion would be perfect, but why can't some Romanian company do it ?
