What Might Have Been

This movie is proof of what might have been if Maria Callas had just said to hell with Onassis and washed her hands clean of him and gone on to greater things like a film career. In all her performances in opera on the stage it was very clear that Maria Callas was an excellent actress and easily dominated the stage. She dominates Medea and it's so effortless plus that beautiful face of her's burns a hole in the screen. It is very evident that Pasolini, though homosexual, is very much in love with his leading lady and her scenes are magic. If Maria Callas had embarked on a film career she would have become one of the great ladies of the silver screen. Oh what might have been!

Well said - she definitly does burn a hole in the screen in Medea! Incidentally, she also performed Medea on stage before and after 1969, so she had a deeper connection with the character than other actresses of her time. She was literally born to be Medea.

Watching Maria Callas act in this film, the audience senses that a lot of Medea's passionate reactions to Jason correspond to Callas' real-life passion for Onassis.Only a year before he had broken her heart by marrying Jackie for political reasons.The Medea-Jason-Glauce triangle corresponds in real life to the Callas-Onassis-Jackie triangle."Medea" must have been Callas' way of exorcising Onassis from her life.

Callas has a most amazing face. It's incredibly beautiful and has such depth - in her eyes, expressions and the proud bone structure of her cheeks and nose. I found her mesmeric.

Movement ends, intent continues;
Intent ends, spirit continues

I absolutely love Medea but I have to disagree. What other roles could she have played? I can't imagine her in anything.
