Are we supposed to root for the Germans?

This film seems strange to me. Normally in "escape" films the audience roots for the person/people that are making the escape. Surely that's not what was intended here, correct?

I saw a little bit of it last night so maybe I don't fully understand the plot.

reply

Whoever made this film must have been very anti-British.

Yes we do root for the Germans , aren't you sick of seeing films of pow escaping German camps......i'm not but having the tables turn is a nice change. Germans a good people too don't be such a racist .

reply

Saw this great film recently and I was rooting for Connor. I thought the character was a very intelligent man and a great detective.

reply

It seems that way and I sort of was rooting for them. Have you ever seen Das Boot? What is often lost in history is that not all Germans during WWII were horrible Nazis sending people off to gas chambers in concentration camps. Some of them - perhaps a large portion of them - were just patriotic soldiers fighting for their country that they loved.

As an American, naturally I have a bias towards wanting the Nazi prisoners to lose, but if the nationalities were reversed - if this were a Nazi-run POW camp and the prisoners were Allied soldiers there would be no question of who to support.

The Germans were defiant, disciplined and focused on their mission - not really that different from how they are today which probably explains why they have the strongest economy in the EU.

I was rooting for the Nazis that defied Schluetter.

reply

Not sure how anyone could root for Schluetter and his team ... they killed about a dozen sleeping men so they could escape ... as well as the other Lieutenant.
