Sacrifice

I know this movie is based on a novel, but would the Kreigsmarine officers really sacrifice their Luftwaffe compatriots? - the scene where the tunnel dirt is dropped into Barracks 3, where the Luftwaffe officers lived.

Most certainly.

Keep in mind that the Luftwaffe prisoners generally failed to help support the Kriegsmarine and Heer prisoners in the riots. After all, the only German servicemen prioritized to escape were the sailors, so there was no point in the Luftwaffe men risking their necks if they weren't going to benefit. Furthermore, it looked like the Luftwaffe men (Neuchel, anyway) might even expose the escape plot to the Brits.

All in all, from the Kriegsmarine point of view, that made the Luftwaffe men expendable - they were of no use and untrustworthy.

There seemed to be some inter-service rivalry between the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe. It came to a head in the Neuchl business. Schlueter, who is highly ruthless, will sacrifice anyone to get U-Boat crews back into the war. I think the cave-in even killed some of the Heer (Army) prisoners.
