Why did they throw the communion wafers in the pond?


What were they doing there? What part of France was this filmed in?

It was just part of their transgressive rejection of "the host". They were looking for ways to subvert the religion foisted upon them.

That whole sequence was so odd. The first time I watched the movie, I thought it was a fantasy sequence, as I didn't see how they could have had the gardener Leon taking part in it. They had him dressed up in robes out on the lake with them. How did that conversation go where they approached him and told him what they wanted? Maybe as an employee of the family, he just supposed he'd better do anything the young missus asks.
