Explain the whistling in the beginning
At the prison camp where one is about to be executed, the crowd starts whistling and moving their arms up and down. What was this? A protest?

shareI would say it was a protest, too. I think this scene was copied from a similar scene in Peckinpah's Major Dundee where the Confederate POWs whistled Dixie in protest.
