Anyone think this should be remade?

Anyone think this should be remade? The play is just fantastic but the movie just didn't seem to have the same edge.

I thought that at first when I bought the DVD. But on watching it again with my wife, I actually got to liking it very much.

So I hope it doesn't get remade, because you can't really impersonate the past and it was made in a good era.

I am usually absolutely against remakes, however I do feel Loot should be re-made and I will explain why.

Firstly the 1970 film is great and I'm amazed they got away with as much as they did, it's all quite outrageous considering the time and attitudes back then.

That said Joe Orton was sadly born too early. As a writer (and person) he was totally outrageous and had a fantastically dark sense of humour which often had to be toned down for audiences. Nowadays with the various films and TV shows we are subjected to, he would not only have been well received but also a global phenomenon!

There are many aspects of Loot (the film) which I don't feel entirely comfortable as being Orton's original intention when he created the characters. Firstly the two leads were gay lovers but this was somewhat disguised by having Dennis act like a heterosexual sex addict. Remember homosexuality wasn't legal in the UK until 1967 so to portray a gay couple on film back than was absolutely unheard of. Secondly there could have been much more in appropriate incidents that occurred with the body which (again) would have been toned down not to offend.

Nowadays Orton plays give brilliantly to being re-made. The man must have been so frustrated back in the 1960's that all his scripts were so sedated so not to offended any of the stuffy theatre crowd. He would have loved the freedom our current writers, film-makers and theatre producers have and capitalised on it big time.

Because of this I absolutely feel 'Loot' should be re-made just as Orton would have wanted it to be seen when he first envisaged it.

I first saw this film on TV when I was about 12 or 13 years of age and I found it very uncomfortable viewing since I watched it with my parents.

But even then I suspected Dennis and Hal swung very much both ways.

Okay it seems quite tame by today's standards, but I think it makes it all the more special for it.

I think it should be filmed, but not as a movie, as a filmed play--the heart of it is the dialog, not the action, and I thought the movie really missed the boat, to be honest...I'm not really sure it COULD be a good movie for that reason (I have a BBC audio cast version with Andy Serkis as Dennis that is absolutely awesome). But I'd love to actually see the thing immortalized, without changes, and done by a cast who not only can act well (as in the movie) but really understand and interpret the piece correctly (which I thought they didn't do well in the movie).

Please no.

The direction was awful. What drugs was the crew on (including the director)? Yes, this needs to be remade: the play is classic and this could be done a lot better.

Agreed. This ordinary film did the play no favours at all.🐭

Yes I think it should be remade with Rupert Grint as Hal.
