The Opening Scene

I've always considered this a bullsh*t moment: Yes, it's dark, yes it's raining, but Kelly is sitting in a line of German vehicles in an American Jeep, and it took the Germans THAT long to notice him? The Jeep didn't look remotely like any vehicle the Germans had in WWII; it would have stuck out like a sore thumb, and somebody would have immediately investigated it.

Anybody else think it was a stretch?

The Germans are more or less in a rear area. They're not on high alert. They're not expecting it. I don't know if u ever served but soldiers are ALWAYS sleep deprived. Kelly and co are keeping quiet, not trying to stand out, and bugged out th second they got made without trying to shoot their way out. Very ballsy

Most ridiculous comment I've ever seen.
Kelly and co are keeping quiet
That's when we see them! They still had to drive into town and nab a Colonel using an American service vehicle with a large star on the hood. Too far fetched for me but didn't ruin the movie.

It's still one of my favorite movies; the opening scene has always bugged me a little bit, though.

Use of captured vehicles was very common, especially by the vehicle-short Germans. A jeep in an apparently secure rear area would be nothing special, particularly with a senior German officer in full clean and shiny uniform sitting in the passenger seat.

I agree DaveR011, it could of easily have been assumed it was a captured vehicle, especially with the German officer in plain sight. I doubt no one would have expected an American jeep with American soldiers in it...that would have been the last thing those soldiers expected, enemy soldiers ballsy enough to just be sitting there in their convoy line! Plus it was *beep* out and at night. Great movie, well made with a great cast.
