Director Delbert Mann

did a good job on this adaptation, as he was also the director for the 1955 Oscar-winning "Marty".
He seems to work well with characters that are 'plain' but have big hearts.

I got to meet him a few years ago before he passed away, at a film festival outside L.A. and he was a nice old guy.
