Jane Eyre 1970 sample

If you Google "Jane Eyre" under Google Videos, you may watch a low resolution sample of the 1970 film, and get an idea of its general condition. My DVD of the film is somewhat better quality than this, but the video at least gives you some sense of the fine acting and beautiful soundtrack.

I must say that every time I watch it, I see new things to admire in this taut and nuanced performance.

I tried to google it, but unfortunatly didn't see it. I really want to see it again. I believe this 1970 version is the best adaptation. Do you know where I can find the DVD, amazon.com? Thanks!

reply

Yes, Amazon does have DVDs for $5 and less. If you search Amazon DVDs with keywords "Jane Eyre 1970", it should pull up a few links to this item.

When you searched Google, did you first click on the small "Video" link just above the search box? I think one has to do this in order to get access to the archive of videos. It brings up a page of popular videos, and a new search box, which is where you'd type and enter "Jane Eyre". I'm seeing it as the second listing, with a blue sky thumbnail. This video gives a pretty good idea of the quality of the DVD.

(I'd include the web address here, but am not sure what IMDB's policy is regarding in-text URLs.)

Good Luck!

Do you know anything about the film's distribution in the US? I remember seeing it on television sometime in 1970 or '71 (black & white TV, so I can't attest to the color--but it was certainly much crisper.)

One would think that with 39+ copies circulating, someone must have at least one stashed away in a private collection or archive. I, for one, would pay good money for a good quality DVD of this film.

thank you so much for posting that, I also loved the soundtrack, so it was good to here it again....been watching the new Masterpiece Theater version and it made me think of this one that I watched as a teenager.

I love all the specail clips that can be found on Youtube.

I know I'm late to the party, but this adaptation is available at the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/JaneEyre70.

It was the first adaptation I saw after reading the book. I'd seen 1943 first but, once I read the book, I had little use for that one because it omits so much of the story.
