Proof that it's a fine line between a memorable movie and one that you remember as sucky. This movies last 10% totally destroyed it. I suggested to my wife who watched it with me that since this was an Italian production that maybe mafia money financed it and they wanted it to end the way it did as a message. Common sense was definitely not involved in making the finale. I don't know if it's the worst ever but it's a top 50 for sure. It is competing with a lot of low budget sci fi stuff from the 50's and 60's.

I'm not sure why it's the worst ending ever. Gena Rowlands character is kind of clumsily integrated into the story at the last minute, is that what you mean? Or is it that you don't believe the mafia could bring in a dragnet so efficiently on their getaway? Many movies have less satisfying endings than this one, I think.

He stole a lot of money from someone and you expect a happy ending?

I was rooting for him, he's a very sympathetic character but his end was not a surprise.

I saw a Peter Falk film years ago and I think it might be this film? All I remember is at the end somebody gets shot through the back window of a car, falls onto the road dead and Peter Falk comes running up to him all upset. Is this that film?

And he was a pretty unsympathetic guy. This movie must've been financed by the mob. How else would they pull that off in Vegas?

I'd say it's the kind of ending you expect from that kind of simple and dark movie. Would it have been a more convincing ending if Hank and the girl had made it through ? Likely,it would have been judged as corny and unbelievable.
I'm really surprised at the posts who claim the mafia had any kind of influence over the making of the movie. The whole point of it seemed to be the autodestructive violence of the mob: each time a member looks or acts suspicious, he's hounded and killed. I certainly don't think it was a "lesson" of some sort about how powerful the gang was.

*semi spoiler alert*

I can accept the ending, but I'm still stuck on...well, I guess I can save it from being a spoiler by asking, "who threw the knife"? Has nothing to do with the ending, but I ask because every time I try to think about what I think about the ending, I can't get over that question.
