Is this available on DVD?

Is this movie available on DVD (in any region) ? I've heard a lot of good things about this film, and being that Gian Maria Volonte is in it, combined with the fact that Morricone does the score, I really would like to see it.

I've had two run-ins with this film.

Two years ago I actually watched thirty minutes of this film on television while I was house sitting. I had been wanting to see the film for a while, however the print on television was dubbed and fullscreen. I stopped watching figuring that if they were showing what looked like a DVD print on cable that I would be seeing it in stores withing a few months. Sadly this was not true and I can't even find rumors that this film is slated for DVD release anywhere.

Then last year the American Film Institute theater in Silver Spring (http://www.afi.com/silver/) Maryland announced a screening much to my excitement. However upon arriving to the theater with a group of friends we found out it was in fact showing at the AFI's Kennedy Center theater location in D.C.; completely impossible to reach in time with the reported traffic and only five minutes until showtime. There was a lot of sorrow and moping that night.

I'm surprised there isn't at least an Italian import out there.

Is this even available on LaserDisc at least?

Does anyone know if there's any legal reason or something why this isn't out on DVD? It just doesn't make sense otherwise. I really want to see it, I thank Fantomas for instilling my interest in this movie...

I have no idea. I mean, it won all sorts of awards in 1971, didn't it? Only thing I can figure is maybe the company who owns the film is refusing to let it be distributed internationally, or are asking too much for these rights. I can only hope that Criterion somehow manages to get the rights to this film so we can get a good, proper release with the Italian track and English subtitles.

Those lucky enough to live in or near NYC can see the film at the Film Forum on Saturday, Feb. 3rd.

There's always legal problems with bringing an old movie out on DVD. Copyright laws have gotten so restrictive that you have to track down everybody with a claim on the movie, down to the lowliest bit player, and get them to sign off. That's an expensive process, so the DVD just doesn't happen until somebody's convinced that the cost is likely to be made back in sales.

Also, Ennio Morricone, who wrote the music, is a big deal nowadays, and must get a lot of money for the right to play his music. That adds a bit to the cost of bringing out the DVD and further increases the risk that it won't make a profit.

A pity. I've been wanting to see this since it came out.

I recently saw a "restored" version at the Wisconsin Film Festival and it was amazing. But, more importantly, I think this means it will soon be coming to video. Last year the WFF screened the restored version of "Killer of Sheep," which was released on DVD a few months later. I mean, why restore something if you're not going to release it?

Anyway, fingers are crossed.

And yet plenty of low-budget giallo movies from the same period, many also with Morricone soundtracks, have been released on dvd.

Maybe if this movie had been sleazier and less award-winning, it would be easier to find?

reply

it's available on DVD but only in Italian, sans subtitles of any kind.

It's not a film that leans heavily on dialogue, it's quite visual - although some of the irony may get lost if one does not understand Italian - but IMHO it's worth having even without subtitles!
However, I hope Criterion takes notice and release it properly - it's a true classic!

No, 36 years after its release and it's still not available for home viewing. It is the only Foreign Film Oscar winner that is not available and I think that is disgraceful.

reply

As somebody already mentioned, it is available officially, but only in Italian. However if you dig around you should be able to dig up either a subtitled version or a dubbed version - both are available unofficially. As for the film itself, it's well worth watching. And yes, it is shocking that there isn't an English-language friendly release.

The situation has now changed. Last month I purchased on line a copy of "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" on DVD, thru Amazon.
The disk is "plain vanilla", i.e. overdubbed in english, no wide screen, no subtitles, no chapter list, no special features. Nevertheless the picture quality is fairly good - sharp with accurate color.

I just bought a copy of Investigation of a Citizen on E-Bay and watched it last night. It is Region 0, and can be watched with English Subtitles in Italian language OR there is an English dubbed version. It is obvious that the dubbed version is taken from the US VHS release and has a fair amount of hiss, also halfway through the film the dubbing goes out of synch. The good news is the subtitled version is great. This DVD is Widescreen, 16x9 enhanced and the picture looks like it is remastered for DVD or possibly taken from a laserdisc(?). The audio on the subtitled version sounds really good as well. Overall this is a great copy to have until someone like Criterion gets their hands on it. I believe the maker of the DVD is Alfa Video. The only negative is that my laptop doesnt recognize the disc at all, so I cant back it up. It isnt a DVD-R either
