I guess Peck and the others really needed a paycheck. It's such a drab, plodding film, I can't imagine any other reason to be in it.
Perhaps Peck wanted to play against type? His character certainly is as far from Atticus Finch as you can get.
Every character is either sleazy, slimy, or on the make.
On the other hand my wife loves the movie, so I mark it every time it's on TV just so she can see it and I can make fun of it.
I guess this is just one of the many times your wife was right.

Oh man... I totally disagree with you. This movie is awesome. I love the look of it, the setting, the characters (and the people who played them), the story line, etc. I wish there was a Part 2 that told us what became of Henry Tawes and Alma / her family. :)
shareThere are so so many films you can make fun of but not this one. It's just a small town sheriff with a huge obsession for a young girl and for the first time he's in love. I don't like the ending as Alma never really cared for Henry and he winds up a pitiful broken man.
