Was Release Held Up For Some Reason?

Watched it last night, and noticed at the end the copyright was 1969. The film was finished and copyrighted some time in 1969, but wasn't released anywhere until October 1970.

I wonder if the producers of such an autumnal drama figured it would do better at the box office in the Autumn?
