Just released on DVD + Bluray yesterday!

It's nice to see old films, especially horror films such as this, released on newer formats for future generations to enjoy!

I was hoping to pick it up but none of the stores (Target, Best Buy, FYE) had it so Amazon it will be.

A great transfer to blu-ray. I can not believe it was 42 years ago when I saw this in theatres. No extras but the trailer but that's ok.

The only good thing to come out of the Depp Dark Shadows movie was to have this released along with Night of Dark Shadows a while after his film was released on blu ray/dvd.

As a fan of the original series, I have to say I never found this movie to be a very good representation of the first half of the series (I haven't finished watching House yet, but I have a feeling it's not going to be a great representation of the other half of the series). I think the Johnny Depp movie did a very good job of summarizing Barnabas' backstory, but also took too many liberties (combining Vicky with Maggie, not explaining that David's mother is a Phoenix, etc). Honestly, if I had to choose what to watch of the 2 original movies or the newer, I'd choose the newer (even though I own all of them on BluRay). The ultimate will always be the original series, even though it can be quite a challenge to sit through.

Just finished Night of Dark Shadows - what an awful movie! Didn't properly tell the story of Angelique at all. What a huge waste of time. No wonder it's been out of print for so long!

Yes-a missed opportunity. Grayson Hall as ''Carlotta'' and Lara Parker ''Angelique'' still steal the film, though. Without them, it wouldn't really be worth watching.

I agree it's lousy but u can't blame the filmmakers. The original cut ran about two hours and they cut out close to 30 minutes (for no good reason) rendering the story incomprehensible. They did find the cut footage years later and supposedly were going to release it uncut...but they obviously didn't.

I wouldn't be surprised if we never, ever got to see the complete version of the film. Although I would very much like to, I can't see it happening in my lifetime.

You never know. Considering they released the entire run of "Dark Shadows" on DVD and Blu-Ray (both the 1966 and 1990 versions) and both the movies they MIGHT release an uncut version. I think that was the plan but Tim Burton's big-budget redo bombed so they probably just decided to not bother. Still, a lot of people have been complaining about it so that might make them reconsider.

reply

I hope they do reconsider. A lot of people seem to dislike NODS (I'm not one of them, I like it despite the recuts) and I think seeing the complete version would change their minds completely. And it would make those of us who do like the movie would probably like it even more as well.

Years ago Video Watchdog wrote a whole article about the cut scenes--where they were in the movie and what happened in them. At that point I still had the movie on VHS and couldn't make heads or tails out of it. I watched it again and paused wherever there was a cut scene, read what happened in it and continue on. By the end the movie made a LOT more sense and made me appreciate it. So hopefully we WILL see the uncut version someday. Even Grayson Hall said the cut version was so bad she couldn't get through it even once.

I finally watched the film on Blu-Ray for the first time today and after watching it on VHS all the time for so many years the difference was amazing. It was like seeing the film for the first time and it was incredibly beautiful. I will likely go back to VHS in future viewings just for nostalgia sake, but I'm glad I got the opportunity to watch it on Blu-Ray at least once.
