How was Jeff okay with Barnabas dating Maggie?

I didn't know who Jeff Clark was until about 3/4 into the film because the character was never established. Jeff and Maggie never spend any time together alone and there is no reference to them being a couple.

We see Barnabas courting Maggie--taking her out to restaurants, inviting her over for an intimate meal, walking with her through the wilderness in daylight (after his transfusion treatment), etc. However, Maggie never mentions she's already in a relationship. Instead she's happy to go on dates with Barnabas and exclaims how must she enjoys spending time with him because of his child-like appreciation of nature and whatnot. Did Jeff and Maggie have an open relationship where they could see other people?

I didn't realize Jeff and Maggie were even an item until after she's bitten and drained, when he's sitting by her bedside and kisses her on the face. The same goes for the Carolyn-Todd relationship; I didn't realize Carolyn was in a relationship either until after she's dead, when Todd is referred to as her fiance. How was anyone supposed to know the two were engaged when Carolyn is hotly pursuing her relative (yuck) Barnabas!

Well, at the costume party I noticed from the look on Jeff's face that he was annoyed by Barnabas trying to flirt with his woman. When she tries to introduce them, Jeff says "We've already met" in a dismissive way as if they didn't get off to a good start. Or at least that's how I tried to interpret it. But I do agree that Maggie seemed to have forgotten about Jeff pretty quickly. She didn't seem to mind getting attention from another man and didn't attempt to stop it. Almost as if she enjoyed the possibility of two men fighting over her.

The problem was they they had to edit scenes to fit in the original 2 hour run format, which was 96 minutes in length film wise. Certain scenes that established Jeff and Maggie together were omitted as well as Jeff meeting Barnabas prior to the costume party

Remember, both women were under the hypnotic vampire effect. Even in Dracula, Lucy and Mina easily forget their commitments to their men to go when the Count calls. It is only because Mina has a more serious and strong personality and intelligence that she resists.

Still, you can see where important establishing scenes were cut, that should have fleshed out these relationships.
